Recognizing & Combating Altitude Sickness
One thing that is common to come up against in Colorado is altitude sickness. A lot of visitors—and even people who have been here a long time—can get sick due to the altitude change, so it’s important to recognize the signs and learn to combat altitude sickness when you’re being really active. We don’t want altitude sickness to slow you down!
Symptoms of Altitude Sickness
Sometimes called “mountain sickness,” altitude sickness happened when the pressure of the air drops and there is less oxygen. Any time you go rapidly to drastic altitudes of 8,000 or feet above sea level, you risk a chance of altitude sickness. However, some people with poorer health may even find themselves struggling at lower altitudes.
As visitors come to Colorado, they will definitely feel that pressure drop. And while you do adjust to a higher altitude the longer you live in a place, even if you’re a citizen of Colorado, you risk getting sick when you start venturing into higher altitudes through climbing, hiking, or tackling those 14ers.
So how do you know if altitude is the culprit if you’re getting sick on a mountain?
· Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)is pretty mild, and it involves a hangover-like sensation of dizziness, head and muscles aches, and nausea.
· High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE),which can be very dangerous, causes fluid to build up in your lungs.
· High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE)is the worst form of altitude sickness, and it happens when fluid builds up in the brain.
· Symptoms of the last two altitude sicknesses can run anywhere from vomiting, extreme fatigue, shortness of breath, loss of appetite, insomnia, cerebral edema, respiratory failure, coma, or death.

Combating Altitude Sickness
The good news is that you can be proactive when traveling to higher altitudes so that you can combat altitude sickness! But if you develop altitude sickness, go to a lower altitude as soon as possibleand seek help.
